Hours after the Washington Post reported that Republican U.S. Senate candidate Roy Moore may have pursued relationships with teenage girls as young as 14, Alabama State Auditor Jim Ziegler – also a Republican – defended him.
“There is nothing to see here,” Ziegler told the Washington Examiner. Ziegler pointed to the Bible to justify the possibility that Moore may have pursued a sexual relationship with at least one underage girl.
“Take the Bible,” Moore said. “Zachariah and Elizabeth for instance. Zachariah was extremely old to marry Elizabeth and they became the parents of John the Baptist.
Then, Ziegler invoked Christ.
“Also take Joseph and Mary,” Ziegler said. “Mary was a teenager and Joseph was an adult carpenter. They became parents of Jesus.”
Alabama State Auditor Jim Zeigler (R).
“There’s just nothing immoral or illegal here,” Ziegler finished. “Maybe just a little bit unusual.”

Roy Moore, who is facing calls to drop out of the race to fill Alabama’s vacant U.S. Senate seat from Republicans like Senator John McCain, is known as an evangelical firebrand. He has been twice removed from the Alabama Supreme Court, most recently for refusing to enforce the United States Supreme Court’s ruling on marriage equality for gay couples.
Moore faces off against Democrat Doug Jones on December 12th.
